Google’s artificial intelligence division is undergoing a significant leadership change. DeepMind CEO Demis Hassabis is stepping back from day-to-day operations and will assume the role of chairman of the unit.
Chief Technology Officer Koray Kavukcuoglu will take over the operational leadership responsibilities. His new duties will include overseeing the development of the next version of Google’s Gemini AI model.
At the same time, DeepMind Chief Scientist Jeff Dean is departing the company. Dean, one of Google’s earliest employees, plans to launch his own firm called Discovery Loop.
He will be joined at the new venture by several prominent researchers. Longtime collaborator Sanjay Ghemawat, DeepMind VP of Research Oriol Vinyals, and Google Brain co-founder Quoc Le are among those expected to participate.
The dual changes mark a notable transition for Google’s AI efforts. The reorganization of leadership and the departure of key scientific talent could influence the direction of future research and product development.
