Is WhatsApp’s End-to-End Encryption Claim Truly Secure?
WhatsApp promotes its end-to-end encryption as the default standard for user privacy. However, the majority of chat backups are stored in plain text on Apple iCloud or Google Drive servers, leaving messages unprotected unless users manually enable an extra security layer.

While messages are encrypted during transit, most users rely on cloud backups for convenience. These backups remain unencrypted by default, and only a small percentage of users activate the optional end-to-end encrypted backup feature, which requires setting up a strong password or passkey.
Even when one user enables encrypted backups, chats can still be exposed if the other participants have not done the same. Additionally, WhatsApp collects and can share metadata such as who you communicate with and when. Apple and Google receive thousands of government requests each year for user data stored in iCloud and Google Drive, which may include WhatsApp backups.
In comparison, Telegram has maintained a strong record of not disclosing user message content throughout its history, focusing instead on user-controlled privacy options. For those concerned about maximum privacy, enabling WhatsApp’s encrypted backup feature and using strong protection is highly recommended. No action is needed for existing services during any updates, but reviewing backup settings ensures better long-term security.
Users can check WhatsApp settings under Chats > Chat Backup to enable end-to-end encrypted backups. For any questions, support is available through the app or official help resources.
