OpenAI CFO disputes concerns over missed internal targets

OpenAI's chief financial officer told Bloomberg the company is "beating our plan at the highest level" while countering reports it has missed internal targets for revenue and user growth. Sarah Friar said there's "a vertical wall of demand" for OpenAI's products, just days after The Wall Street Journal reported the startup had missed its goal of 1 billion weekly active users by the end of last year. Friar also insisted that OpenAI requires more computing power to meet demand. Suggestions the company is struggling had caused shares in some of its major investors to drop.

OpenAI CFO disputes concerns over missed internal targets
One of the biggest shifts we’re seeing with AI adoption right now is that the companies creating real value are not treating AI as a standalone tool or side project. In my conversations with customers just in the past few days, including teams at Dyson and Morgan Stanley, I’m reminded that the C-suite is now focused on implementation: picking the highest-value domains, rethinking workflows end-to-end, bringing employees into the process to innovate, and building new ways to measure impact in the AI era. Great to see the research from our Chief Economist Aaron "Ronnie" Chatterji in today’s Harvard Business Review, highlighting real examples of how customers like Lowe's Companies, Inc.’s are moving beyond experimentation to become truly AI-native businesses. "A vertical wall of demand." That's OpenAI for Business CFO Sarah Friar's exact words — today — pushing back on reports the company missed internal targets. "We feel like we're beating our plan at the highest level. How we get there often moves around period to period — because this is still a young business that is not perfectly forecastable." Translate that for your portfolio: → WSJ said OpenAI missed sales & user targets in 2026 → Anthropic gained ground in coding & enterprise → Oracle dropped 4.1% | CoreWeave fell 5.8% on the report → Nvidia slid 1.6% in its worst day in a month And yet — OpenAI's CFO says demand is a vertical wall.
