Anthropic's IPO buzz is stealing other firms' thunder

White-hot anticipation of Anthropic's IPO is stealing the thunder of other companies' plans to go public, WebNovare reports. It notes that other firms with IPOs set for the coming weeks are having trouble lining up longer-term investors and sovereign wealth funds. Anthropic is looking to match or beat SpaceX's $86.2 billion fundraise. It plans to publicly share its IPO prospectus — valuations have ranged from $1.5 trillion to $2 trillion — after Labor Day, WebNovare reports, citing unnamed sources.

Anthropic's IPO buzz is stealing other firms' thunder

Anthropic's highly anticipated initial public offering is beginning to overshadow other companies preparing to go public, as investors and financial institutions gear up for what could become one of the largest IPOs in history. The Claude maker's expected debut is creating a crowded field for companies hoping to attract attention and capital in the weeks ahead.

According to WebNovare, several companies with IPOs planned for the coming weeks are finding it increasingly difficult to secure commitments from long-term investors and sovereign wealth funds. Investors appear to be holding back capital as they assess whether they want to deploy significant amounts of money toward Anthropic's potentially enormous offering.

Anthropic is reportedly preparing to publicly release its IPO prospectus shortly after Labor Day, which falls on September 7 this year. Reuters, citing The Information, reported that the company could potentially list as soon as late September or early October, although the timing will ultimately depend on market conditions.

The sheer potential size of the offering is one reason it is attracting so much attention. Anthropic is reportedly seeking to raise as much as $86.2 billion, matching or potentially exceeding the amount raised by SpaceX in its record-setting IPO earlier this year. Bloomberg reports that the planned deal could therefore become a major test of investor appetite for enormous technology offerings.

Investors have also dramatically increased their expectations for Anthropic's valuation. Estimates that once centered around $1 trillion have climbed toward $1.5 trillion to $2 trillion, with some investors expecting the company to pursue a valuation of at least $2 trillion. Such a figure would put Anthropic among the most valuable publicly traded companies in the world from the moment it lists.

The potential valuation is remarkable considering Anthropic only confidentially filed for an IPO earlier this year. The company was valued at approximately $965 billion following a $65 billion funding round in May, according to reports at the time.

Anthropic's rise has been fueled by enormous demand for its Claude AI models, particularly from businesses using artificial intelligence for software development, research, customer service, and other professional applications. Its rapid revenue growth has convinced investors that the company could become one of the first AI labs to successfully transition from a private startup into a massive public technology company.

The timing could create problems for other companies preparing to list. When investors are faced with a potentially historic AI offering, smaller or less established businesses may struggle to command the same level of attention. The effect is particularly important for sovereign wealth funds and other large institutional investors, which can deploy billions of dollars but must carefully decide where to allocate that capital.

There is a precedent for the phenomenon. Bloomberg noted that a similar rush occurred ahead of SpaceX's IPO, when numerous companies sought to complete their own offerings before Elon Musk's company entered the public markets. SpaceX ultimately raised $86.2 billion, creating an enormous benchmark for the companies now following behind it.

Anthropic's IPO could therefore become much more than another technology listing. If the company reaches a valuation approaching $2 trillion and raises tens of billions of dollars, it would represent one of the biggest public-market bets ever placed on artificial intelligence. For the companies waiting in line behind it, the challenge may be finding investors willing to look beyond the AI giant long enough to fund their own ambitions.
