AMD shares explode on booming data center business

Advanced Micro Devices shares soared 20% premarket on Wednesday following Tuesday's blowout earnings report. Fueled by a 57% increase in its data center business, the chipmaker nearly doubled its net income from last year, while revenue climbed 38% to $10.25 billion. The demands of artificial intelligence continue to buoy the entire sector, and AMD CEO Lisa Su called data centers the "primary driver of our revenue and earnings growth." The company anticipates $11.2 billion in revenue for the next quarter, with its Helios rack-scale systems due later this year.

AMD Delivers Strong Quarter as Focus Shifts to AI Systems

Q1 earnings highlight growth, but attention turns to future AI infrastructure

AMD reported an impressive first quarter, exceeding expectations on both revenue and earnings. The company posted $10.25 billion in revenue, ahead of the projected ~$9.9 billion, while earnings per share reached $1.37, surpassing estimates of around $1.29.

The Data Center segment led the performance, surging 57% year-over-year to $5.8 billion. This growth was largely fueled by strong demand for EPYC processors and Instinct AI GPUs.

However, rapid growth in Data Center is no longer a surprise to investors. The market has already priced in AMD’s ability to expand in this segment.

The Next Focus: Helios

The conversation is now shifting toward AMD’s upcoming Helios AI rack system, expected to launch later this year. This initiative represents a strategic move beyond individual chips and into full-scale AI infrastructure solutions.

With Helios, AMD is aiming to compete at the system level—offering complete AI racks rather than just processors and GPUs. This positions the company directly in the evolving race to control end-to-end AI computing platforms.

As the AI landscape matures, the competitive focus is expanding from components to entire systems. Full-stack infrastructure is emerging as the next major battleground, and AMD is positioning itself to be a key player in that shift.
