Shopify soars as bullish outlook eases AI disruption fears

Shopify shares surged 17% Wednesday after the company issued a sales forecast that topped Wall Street expectations, helping ease investor concerns that AI could disrupt the e-commerce platform. Revenue is expected to advance at a “low-thirties percentage rate” — outpacing analysts’ forecast of a 27% increase — which would mark its sixth consecutive quarter of growth above 30%. Some Wall Street analysts have warned that Meta’s AI advances could weaken Shopify’s business, while others credited the technology with helping the company outperform competitors in winning market share.

Meta launches its first coding agent

Meta is trying to catch up to rivals with the release of its own coding agent. The social media giant on Wednesday unveiled Muse Code, a terminal-based AI assistant that handles software development tasks and aims to compete with coding tools from Anthropic's Claude and OpenAI's Codex. The agent is powered by the new Muse Spark 1.2 model and represents the latest major release by AI chief Alexandr Wang, who joined Meta in June of last year to help invigorate the company's languishing artificial intelligence strategy.

At the same time, DeepMind Chief Scientist Jeff Dean — one of Google's first employees — is leaving to start his own firm, Discovery Loop. He'll be joined there by longtime collaborator Sanjay Ghemawat, DeepMind VP of Research Oriol Vinyals and Google Brain co-founder Quoc Le.

Meta's AI also hacked another company during testing

Meta's Muse Spark 1.1 AI model hacked into another company during a testing exercise, the company confirmed Wednesday. The news comes after recent disclosures of hacks by advanced models from OpenAI and Anthropic. In fact, the Meta incident bears striking similarities to Anthropic's, with Meta's model allowed access to the open internet during testing due to a "misconfiguration" with a third-party firm called Irregular, which was also used by Anthropic and OpenAI. In a statement, Irregular said it is working on a white paper to share "best practices for containment."
